Category: Puerh

Sticky Rice Puerh Tuocha is premium puerh tea, with a distinctly sticky rice taste. It boasts a rich, nutty, sweet, and hugely aromatic flavor. Rice aroma and taste balance each other in the cup. The underlying puerh brings an earthy base flavor to carry the rice notes. Sticky rice flavor comes from an herb that smells and tastes like sticky rice.

Brewing Sticky Rice

Brew this tea, and your whole house will smell like sticky rice. This compressed puerh comes in small buttons, or nests, wrapped in paper. Remove the paper before brewing. The nests weigh approximately 5 grams, which will brew 16 oz of tea. As the nest steeps, it gradually decompresses and takes the shape of brewed loose-leaf tea.

A few facts about puerh tea:

  • often referred to as a hangover tea
  • can help with digestion
  • has less caffeine than black tea, because older leaves are used to process into puerh
  • is probiotic
  • the only tea actually fermented
  • is a diuretic
  • may help curb your appetite
  • originally traded on the Horse Tea Trade Route

While puerh is in the class of dark tea, which is aged Chinese tea, puerh tea must come from the southern region of Yunnan, China. Puerh tea has its origins in the horse tea trade route, where people in Yunnan would trade tea for horses with the surrounding countries. The tea compressed and aged as it was routed through the mountains. It took on the form of tea, which we now refer to as dark tea, or puerh, depending on its origin location.

Ruby ★★★★★

I was skeptical the rice flavor would come through, but it balances the puerh nicely—nutty and sweet without being cloying. Each tuocha breaks apart easily, and I get several good steeps out of one.

Adam C. ★★★★★

I brewed one of these tuocha cakes in my gaiwan and the nutty sweetness came through right away, with that sticky rice taste lingering in the finish. The rice and tea balance each other nicely without either one dominating the cup, which I appreciated.

Lily ★★★★★

The sticky rice aroma hits you the second the wrapper comes off, and it actually carries through to the cup instead of fading. I dropped one tuocha in my thermos before work and it stayed sweet and nutty through three refills.
